2017 Defensive Coordinators and Schemes

This article will be updated throughout the off-season and contains valuable information pertaining to NFL defensive schemes and coaching changes for the 2017 Season. When selecting an IDP, it is important to not only know what position they play, but also the defensive scheme they play in as well.

For example, outside linebackers in 3-4 schemes generally produce higher sack totals/lower tackle totals than outside linebackers that play in 4-3 schemes. Cornerbacks that play on defenses that incorporate a lot of Cover 2/Tampa 2 looks typically generate above average tackle numbers relative to their position.

Here are the current situations around the NFL:

BASE DEFENSES
4-3:
ATL, BUF, CAR, CIN, CLE, DAL, DET, JAX, LAC, MIA, MIN, NYG, OAK, PHI, SEA, SF, TB
*3-4: ARZ, CHI, DEN, GB, IND, HOU, KC, LAR, NYJ, PIT, TEN, WAS
Multiple Front: BAL, NE, NO

*Most 3-4 teams are mainly using a 1-gap system, although there are still a few teams using a 2-gap system.

Anything in RED is a change from the 2016 season.

9ers not going to a 4-3 as I've read about?

Hey Gary,

Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, the 49ers are going to be switching to a 4-3 defense (that has elements of a 3-4 defense). The update there has been made.

The move to a 4-3 should mean Melvin Ingram moves to Defensive end. When will ESPN acknowledge this change of position on their website?

Thanks!

I'm honestly not sure. It's not as simple as they are running a 4-3 and now he's an end. They run a 4-3 over and Ingram could technically still play most of his snaps "off the ball." However, initial reports indicate he will be the LEO and if that's the case, he should be a DE. I'm just not sure how ESPN goes about making position changes.

Also, when asking for weekly matchup advice please mention the weekly opponent for each player you are listing. This helps me answer questions more quickly.
