2012 Weekly IDP Rankings: Defensive Backs

These are The IDP Guru's Weekly Defensive Back Rankings (for redraft leagues). This page will be updated each week to properly reflect that current week's rankings.

The "Match-Up Strength" is based off of the latest IDP Points Allowed by Position document. These numbers are to be used directionally early in the season. As the season progresses and more data builds, the accuracy of the match-up information increases.

The color key for the strength of weekly matchups is listed below.

Key:

Hayward laid a BIG DEUCE. You've had some doozies at DBs..IDP guru, you think you are gonna stop picking them? I think I am DONE predicting them. Too much variation. SS/FS is the way to go.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@dave
Yah, CBs have been tough to predict this year. Hayward only played in 22 snaps on Monday night as he wasn't a main part of the gameplan. That's the risk you run into with CBs. High risk/high reward.

Pick 3 - Dawan Landry, Leonard Johnson, EJ Biggers, Tramon Williams, Richard Sherman, Drayton Florence, Jacob Lacey, Ricardo Silva

Im thinking landry, johnson and one of the detroit db's going up against indy this week.

Y0ur thoughts?

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@James
Landry, Johnson, and Florence

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Ryan Sitzmann
I say Florence assuming Lacey doesn't play or is limited enough for DF to get starter snaps. If Lacey returns to a starting role this week, then I'd go with Lacey.

Hey Guru! I just found your site a few weeks ago. It's awesome! I appreciate the time you put into the number-crunching and analysis. Anyway, I'm another owner who endured a low-scoring game from Casey Hayward last week. I just looked at the packers' site and noticed that sam shields is list as the #1 RCB. Has it been that way all season or is this a recent development?

Thanks!

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Jay
Hayward has definitely seen an increase in playing time due to injuries in the Green Bay secondary. He has been starting on the outside and sliding into the slot in passing situations. With Shields still out for this week's game, look for Hayward to start again. However, the Packers unexpectedly matched up Davon House on Hakeem Nicks last week leaving Hayward as the odd man out. I don't expect them to do that against the Vikings this week, but there's always a chance so that's one caveat.

Mario Williams vs Buffalo or Jared Allen vs Chicago?

Juggernaut said...

Hey Ryan, thanks for all your advice - I'm in the playoffs! Here's my delimna, I need to start either william moore or leodis Mckelvin. I see that you have neither on your rankings. Who would you start? Also, at LB, do I start Brad Jones or Erin Henderson? Thanks as always!

Unknown said...

anything on Reshad Jones? Surprised no mention of this guy...sorry in advance if I've missed something on him

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@davey
I'd go with Allen against the turnstile Bears offensive line.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Juggernaut
Go with Moore and Brad Jones.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Unknown
Jones had a big week but I think a lot of that had to do with the extremely high amount of tackle opportunities the Fins had against the Pats last week. I expect his numbers to regress back down into the DB3- range this week against the 49ers.

Samuel Lingle said...

Need 3 LBs, 2 CBs, and one more of either...

LB - Keuchly, Russell Allen, Zach Brown, Donald Butler, Mychal Kendricks, Whitney Mercilus, Danny Trevathan
CB - Roman Harper, Harrison Smith...

I could pick up Dannieal Manning, Sheldon Brown, Buster Skrine, Danny McRary off of waivers.

With Butler injured, would you grab one of those guys for the flex spot? Or just rely on Kendricks/Mercilus?

Ben Strauss said...

Hey Ryan,

Need to chose 4

Weddle, Stevie Brown, Jordan Babineaux, Reggie Nelson, Glover Quinn.

Thanks

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Samuel Lingle
I'd start Kuechly, Allen, and Brown. Then go with Harper and Harrison. As your flex, I'd pickup Danny Mccrary.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Ben Strauss
I'd go with Weddle, Babineaux, Brown, and Nelson.

Unknown said...

I agree, but he has 24 tackles the past three weeks and had an explosive game last week against the patriots..even with a int td called back.

I'll predict he breaks out the remainder of the year and will check back with you in a few weeks :)

Tony Amiri said...

who is a better pick up Tyvon Branch or Roman Harper for week 14 ??

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Tony Amiri
I'd go with Branch. He should be seeing more tackle opportunity with Omar Gaither starting at MLB.

rolltide5891 said...

So i've got 6 slots on defense currently. 2 spots for any defensive position, 2 slots for LB's, and then 2 slots for defensive backs. Currently my 2 LB's are Daryl Washington and Luke Kuechly. My DB spots are filled by LaRon Landry and Mark Barron. For the other 2 spots I have Bobby Wagner and Glover Quin in currently but I just picked up Kam Chancellor. The scoring is 1 pt per tackle .5 per assist. and then 3 for int or sack. Also 1 point for FF or fumble recovery. First week of playoffs for me. Thanks!

Lounge9 said...

Where's Janoris Jenkins? You rank Mikell and Finnegan, but Jenkins has been hot and has scored more than those two when playing teams weak against DBs.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Lounge9
Jenkins has only registered more than 5 solos all season long. He's had a defensive TD in each of the last two weeks, chances are high that he won't get another TD this week, which means he's not likely for a lot of points.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@rolltide5891
I'd keep Kam on the bench this week as he has a bad matchup.

footguy said...

would u start z.brown over d.ryans? thank u

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@footguy
Both have bad matchups but I would give Brown the edge over Ryans.

Leon Vining said...

Any idea what happened to Malcom Jenkins and Dumervil this week? No shows for both. I can't even tell if they played. Do I need to find new options this week, these two have been solid for me all year. Thanks.

Jonny B said...

They both played. Dumberville was just shut out and Jenkins left in the 2nd. I had both one because of the seattle def.

alb said...

need 2 out of corey graham, glover quinn and robert mcclain.

ironmanbravo said...

Tyvon Branch: yahoo says Branch has been deemed out for Week 15 due to neck and ankle injuries, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Rafe said...

Looks like Branch will be out this week. Do you update your ranks?

I need two DB, DL, and LBs. My DLs and LBs have been pretty consistent all year so probably won't touch them, but I keep trying to play the best cards at DB and lately I've been failing.

Current lineup:
CB: Roman Harper (Might be injured), William Moore (Also might be injured), Daniael Manning (Hasn't been performing...even with good match ups.)
DL: John Abraham, Calais Campbell
LB: James Laurinaitis, Luke Kuechly

WW Options
CB: Eric Berry, Quintin Mikell, Troy Polumalo, Cassius Vaughn, Harrison Smith, Reggie Nelson, Stevie Brown, Isa Abdul-Quddus, Mark Barron, Antoine Bethea, Kerry Rhodes, Glover Quin, Reshad Jones
DL: Carlos Dunlap, Cliff Avril, Tyson Jackson, Jason Babin, Desmond Bryant
LB: Bobby Wagner, Anthony Spencer

Trud Blue said...

so does corey lynch just fall off then? 2 double digit tack games then a disappointing 3 this week.. should i stick with him?

Michael Middleton said...

Is Branch really out this week? I need to know because if he is I need to start Nate Allen tomorrow night. Also, same situation with Michael Johnson. Any info would be helpful. Why is Yahoo the only site reporting that Branch is out and that was on December 10th. No one else is reporting that yet.

SinVin said...

Oh my I need you...

Safety: Trust Rhodes or pick up a Houston safety against Indy? If so, which one?

Also could pick up Harrison Smith or S Brown.

Trying to get 15-20 out of Safety. Going with Biggers at CB.

You've gotten me this far!

Jonny B said...

Why does everyone rate ej biggers so high every week. He really has not done much all season. He had a good game last week but he is too up and down to be a top 5 cb.

Nate said...

Echoing ironmanbravo here, but ESPN claims Branch is out for the week, with Mike Mitchel as his back up.

Also a question, but in your experience has differentiating between fantasy points against for Saftey and CB vs just DB been a useful distinction in predicting rankings or not (same for DT/DE vs DL). Was looking at Yahoo's fantasy points against and it seems like there's some significant difference between the rankings for points against. Check it out: http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/721651/pointsagainst?season=2012&pos=S&mode=average

Jer Jols said...

So you like Jones, Biggers, and Rhodes over Deangelo hall?

and would choose Jones out of all of them? I'm thinking about dropping deangelo and going with it... which one out of those 3 would you start this week.

Thanks again man,

Jeremiah

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@alb
McClain and Graham

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Rafe
Yes, I update my ranks. I was waiting on more strong confirmation that Branch was out since Yahoo! was the only place reporting that at the time. Plus, he came back into the game after being injured, so it seemed weird that he would be listed as OUT on Tuesday.

Harper and Stevie Brown
Avril and Dunlap
James L. and Kuechly

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Trud Blue
He falls outside the top 30 due to a horrible matchup against Carolina this week.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Michael Middleton
Not sure what is going on with Branch, I will have to do some digging. Johnson seems to be a true questionable for tonight.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@SinVin
I'd ride the hot hand of Stevie Brown.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Jonny B
He has a great matchup this week against NO. CBs typically do quite well against Drew Brees.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Nate
Yes, it does. I take that into consideration when doing the rankings. Starting next year, I will begin breaking out DL from DT and CB from S in my points allowed document.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Jer Jols
Yes, this week. I'd go with Reshad Jones.

Trud Blue said...

should i stick with lynch? i have verner, j.wilson, and delmus.. stick with lynch?

Unknown said...

I guess youre on to Reshad Jones now? :)...nice to see

Went from never on the list to top ten..love it, you should hire me ;)

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Trud Blue
Yah, I'd stick with Lynch.

CB question

I currently roster Corey Graham (BAL) and Robert McClain (ATL) as my two CB's. Latest news has Jimmy Smith (BAL) and Asante Samuel (ATL) practicing and listed as probable. Do you have any information or insight to wether these two productive CB's will be replaced this weekend by the former starters? Or is there no way to know who the coaches go with? It sounds as though Jimmy Smith is playing. Should I risk starting Corey Graham? Asante Samuel is also a concern as he is now listed questionable at this point...so I don't know about starting Robert McClain. Here is a list of available CB's that look promising this weekend.

PLEASE PICK TWO:

Robert McClain vs. NYG (Asante may start?)
Jimmy Smith/Corey Graham (split starts? could be nightmare risk)
EJ Biggers vs. NO
Leonard Johnson vs. NO
Cassius Vaughn vs. HOU
Jayron Hosley vs. ATL (Prince is out...sleeper? Rolle may move into the slot though?)
Vontae Davis vs. HOU
Kareem Jackson vs. IND
William Gay vs. DET (Peterson gets Megatron right?)

SinVin said...

Yo Guru...

Just another shout out of thanks. Your insight kiks ass.

Stoked to hear your going to seperate DT/DL and CB/S in points allowed. I use that weekly.

Thanks Again...

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@jar
Jenkins has been lucky. I'd pick up Jones.

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@JTEXAS
I probably wouldn't trust McClain or Graham over Biggers this week. I'd go with Biggers in that good NO matchup. I think McClain will be fine though against NYG as he will play the slot even if Samuel plays.

Weird Shit Finder said...

Guru, thanks for all your insights...they've been great..

when are the week 16 rankings coming out?

Cameron Kauffman said...

Who do you like more... Eric Berry against the Colts, Stevie Brown against the Ravens, or Ryan Clark against the Bengals?

Ryan Sitzmann said...

@Cameron Kauffman
Clark is the safest of those options especially in tackle-heavy leagues. However, I like Berry best this week as he had a 11 solos last week and has a great matchup this week.

JTEXAS said...

Starting Corey Graham again against NYG...he has not let me down yet. I have Tim Jennings on the bench and he looks questionable and has a poor match up against ARI. Out of these players who would you go with to compliment Graham?

Don Carey (DET) Listed as a CB in my league...he is now starting as SS. Against ATL this week.
Alt Verner (TEN) Slumping for weeks...against GB.
Javier Arenas (KC) Questionable...against IND.
Derek Cox (JAX) Against NE.
Brandon Carr (DAL) Against NO.

Thanks.
