2011 IDP Game Notes: Week 3

Written By: Johnny Davis

Hello and welcome everyone to the 3rd weekly installment of “IDP Game Notes” brought to you by IDP Guru staff writer, Johnny Davis. This column is quickly turning into one of the most comprehensive, all-encompassing IDP articles anywhere. And it’s free!

Patriots @ Bills

– Buffalo’s Bryan Scott (6 tackles-5 assists, int, pass defensed) is listed as a back-up strong safety, but it appears he’s going to get plenty of playing time despite that. Starting SS George Wilson (7-4, int, PD) and FS Jairus Byrd (8-4, 2 PD) also had good statistical days. ILB Nick Barnett (6-5) filled up the middle well. Rookie DE Marcell Dareus (0-1, PD) didn’t do a whole lot. DT Kyle Williams (0-2) was a viable fantasy option last season, but he’s been awfully quiet this season. CB Leodis McKelvin (3-3, int, PD) continues to put up decent tackle numbers.

– Maybe New England WLB Jerod Mayo (4-1) is being slowed by the thigh injury he’s listed as having because in two of the first three games he has failed to live up to his billing as a top 3 fantasy LB. With SS Pat Chung out with a thumb injury, the Pats’ safeties failed to step up in his absence: Josh Barrett (3-0), Sergio Brown (2-1), and James Ihedigbo (1-0). A few CBs looked good on the stat sheet: Devin McCourty (8-3, PD), Kyle Arrington (3-3, 2 int, 3 PD), and Leigh Bodden (5-2, 2 PD). DE Andre Carter (3-1) had his best game of the young season.

Jaguars @ Panthers
– With the downpour in Carolina, you would think this game’s box score would be full of fluke numbers, but it appears we can take a little useful info away from it. SLB James Anderson (8-1) continued to make a case as the most valuable Panthers LB. DE Greg Hardy (5-1, 1 sack, safety) continued to make a case for him to be added to fantasy rosters. And there were a few other notables: MLB Dan Connor (4-2), DE Charles Johnson (3-0, 1 sack), and WLB Jason Williams (7-1). SS Charles Godfrey sat out with a concussion.

– Jacksonville MLB Paul Posluszny (3-2) had another disappointing day. It’s probably time to hit the panic button, but I’ll give him the rain as an excuse in this one. DT Terrance Knighton (6-0) had an uncharacteristic high number of tackles. SLB Daryl Smith (5-4, 2 PD) had his best statistical performance of the season. FS Dawan Landry (3-2, 1 PD) didn’t amaze anyone.

49ers @ Bengals

– Cincinnati FS Reggie Nelson (7-3) registered 7 solo tackles for the second time this season. MLB Rey Maualuga (4-4, forced fumble) had a decent day. The Bengals’ big-name D-lineman options failed to show up: DE Michael Johnson (2-1) and DE Carlos Dunlap (0-1). The production came from elsewhere on the D-line: DT Jonathan Fanene (2-1, 2 sacks, fumble recovery), DE Frostee Rucker (3-1, 1 sack), DT Geno Atkins (2-1, 1 sack), and Domata Peko (4-4, FF).

– San Francisco ILB Navorro Bowman (8-5) continues to outproduce his counterpart, ILB Patrick Willis (3-5, PD). FS Dashon Goldson (5-3) returned from a knee injury. SS Donte Whitner (1-1, PD) and DE Justin Smith (0-2) had disappointing performances.

Dolphins @ Browns

– Cleveland MLB D’Qwell Jackson (6-5, .5 sack, fumble recovery) had another beastly day. DT Ahtyba Rubin (8-1, 1.5 sacks) reminded us why he was one of the top-scoring DTs last season. SS T.J. Ward (4-0) is not posting numbers like he was last season. DE Jayme Mitchell (3-1, FF, 1.5 sacks, PD) and rookie DT Phil Taylor (4-3, 1 sack) had good numbers, while rookie DE Jabaal Sheard (1-0, PD) disappointed.

– There’s not a whole lot to get excited about when you look at Miami’s box score from this game. SS Yeremiah Bell (3-3, PD) had a decent day, but not much to say beyond that. Noteables: FS Reshad Jones (3-1, PD), ILB Karlos Dansby (2-0), DE Randy Starks (2-0, PD), and OLB Cameron Wake (0-0).

Lions @ Vikings

– Detroit MLB Stephen Tulloch (7-0) posted his best numbers of the season. SLB Justin Durant (6-0) also got in on the tackle action. FS Louis Delmas (4-1) wasn’t spectacular. The D-line got to the QB: DT Ndamukong Suh (3-2, 1 sack), DE Kyle Vanden Bosch (2-0, 1 sack), and DE Cliff Avril (2-0, 1 sack, FF). Rookie DT Nick Fairley is trying to heal from a foot injury and might make his debut in week 4

– Minnesota DE Jared Allen (5-1, FF, 3 sacks) showed why he is considered an elite DL. DE Brian Robison (3-0, 2 sacks) had a good showing in his effort to fill the Ray Edwards role. A couple of LBs registered good numbers: MLB E.J. Henderson (7-3) and SLB Chad Greenway (5-3). The Vikings CBs continue to outshine the safeties: CB Cedric Griffin (7-1) and CB Antoine Winfield (5-2).

Texans @ Saints

– I was actually at this game in the Superdome sitting 6 rows from the field, so I got a good look at the action. MLB Jonathan Vilma was out with a knee injury, but Jo-Lonn Dunbar (6-4, 2 PD) filled in admirably. It was a chance for rookie LB Martez Wilson (1-1) to display his talents, but instead he departed mid-game with a shoulder injury. DE Will Smith (4-2) made a triumphant return from suspension. SS Roman Harper (5-2, PD) had a good game.

– Houston ILB DeMeco Ryans (6-0, PD) had his best tackling performance of the 2011 season, but his numbers still aren’t where they were before his 2010 season-ending injury. SS Glover Quin (6-2) also put up his best 2011 tackling performance. Rookie DE J.J. Watt (4-0, 1 sack) continues to impress. ILB Brian Cushing (4-1) was nothing special. OLB Mario Williams (1-0) banged up his knee.

Giants @ Eagles

– New York’s Jacquian Williams (10-0) is listed as a back-up WLB, but his numbers so far say he is the best source of tackles among Giants LBs. DE Jason Pierre-Paul (7-2, 2 sacks) is a monster, and it appears he is currently the most valuable Giants DL with DE Justin Tuck (1-0) struggling with neck and groin injuries. SS Kenny Phillips (7-2, FF, int, PD) had an outstanding day. Other notables: FS Antrel Rolle (6-1) and CB Aaron Ross (4-1, 2 int, 3 PD).

– Philadelphia MLB Jamar Chaney (3-1) didn’t blow anyone away in his debut as the Mike. As usual, the Eagles DLs terrorized the opposing QB: DE Trent Cole (4-1, 1 sack), DE Jason Babin (2-1, 1 sack), and DT Cullen Jenkins (2-1, 1 sack).

Broncos @ Titans

– With Tennessee starting SS Chris Hope sidelined with a shoulder injury, Jordan Babineaux (6-2) made the most of his opportunity. WLB Will Witherspoon (3-1, int, 1 sack, PD) was all over the box score, while MLB Barrett Ruud (1-3) had an extremely disappointing day. After a big 2010, FS Michael Griffin (3-2) has been awfully mediocre this season. CB Jason McCourty (5-1, int, PD) continues to post good numbers.

– Denver came into this game banged up, with big names DE Elvis Dumervil, WLB D.J. Williams, and CB Champ Bailey inactive. After an eye-popping 10 solo tackles last week, WLB Wesley Woodyard (7-3) continued to shine. MLB Joe Mays (6-2, PD) and SLB Von Miller (3-1, 1 sack, FF) also had good days. It should be interesting to see how the Broncos LB situation shakes out when Williams returns from an elbow injury.

Jets @ Raiders

– Don’t look now, but it looks like Oakland MLB Rolando McClain (7-5) may be finally living up to the hype. SS Tyvon Branch (5-5, int, PD) is about as reliable as they come. FS Michael Huff (1-0) was knocked out of the game with a concussion. DE Matt Shaughnessy (1-0) had a quiet day, instead allowing his D-line mates to thrive: DE Jarvis Moss (2-2, 2 sacks, PD) and DT Richard Seymour (2-2, .5 sack).

– New York FS Eric Smith (7-1) posted a third-straight good game. After getting me excited with his week 1 performance, it appears ILB Bart Scott (4-2) has slipped back into mediocrity. CB Antonio Cromartie (6-3) posted good tackle numbers but also suffered a bruised lung. I didn’t even know that was possible.

Chiefs @ Chargers

– San Diego ILB Donald Butler (8-0) is quietly having a good season. FS Eric Weddle (2-1, int, PD) disappointed in the tackle column, but at least he got an interception. DEs Corey Liuget, Jacques Cesaire, and Luis Castillo are all hurt, opening the door for Vaughn Martin (5-0). Don’t worry. I don’t know who he is either. In a surprise to no one, SS Bob Sanders is injured again.

– Kansas City SS Jon McGraw (0-1) had been filling in well for Eric Berry, but he went down to a knee injury, opening the door for someone just as well-known as Vaughn Martin, that is, Donald Washington (7-1, FF). It’s clear whoever plays at SS in KC can put up numbers, so monitor this situation. Not to be outdone, a few Chiefs LBs posted good stats: ILB Jovan Belcher (8-2), ILB Derrick Johnson (6-1), and OLB Tamba Hali (4-2, 1 sack).

Ravens @ Rams

– Baltimore ILB Ray Lewis (10-0, FF, 1 sack) had an outstanding day. DE/OLB Terrell Suggs (4-0, 1 sack) and CB Lardarius Webb (4-0, int, PD) had good days. FS Ed Reed (2-0) and SS Tom Zbikowski (1-0) had quiet days. DT Haloti Ngata’s (1-0, 28-yd fumble recovery for TD) day was saved by a fluke play.

– The Quintin Mikell (6-0, fumble recovery) project is working out at FS for St. Louis. MLB James Laurinaitis (4-0) had a down day by his standards. DE Chris Long (1-0, 1 sack) at least got a sack. CB Justin King (6-0, FF, 2 PD) continues to rack up tackles, but it may be because he couldn’t cover a bed if he was armed with a blanket.

Packers @ Bears

– Green Bay’s Morgan Burnett (5-1, 2 int, 2 PD) is now officially listed as the FS and I was worried that Nick Collins’ injury would hurt Burnett’s value, but it didn’t hurt in this game. ILB Desmond Bishop (5-0) lost a little momentum but still posted respectable numbers. ILB A.J. Hawk (3-0), OLB Clay Matthews (3-0), and CB Charles Woodson (3-0) didn’t blow anyone’s skirt up on this day.

– After a horrendous week 1, Chicago WLB Lance Briggs (10-4, FF) had his second-straight 10-solo performance. MLB Brian Urlacher (6-1, int, PD) got back to his studly ways. A couple of DLs got to the QB: DE Julius Peppers (2-0, fumble recovery, 1 sack) and DT Henry Melton (3-0, 1 sack).

Cardinals @ Seahawks

– Seattle’s MLB David Hawthorne (6-3, PD) had a good day, but the story was WLB Leroy Hill (8-3, FF, 1 sack) coming out of nowhere. Instead of posting big tackle numbers, SS Kam Chancellor (3-2, FF, int, 2 PD) decided to spread the love around in the box score. DE Chris Clemons (3-4, 1 sack, PD) finally decided to show up.

– Arizona DE Calais Campbell (5-5, 2.5 sacks) put up decent numbers in the first two games, but he really showed his potential in this game. DE Darnell Dockett (3-2, .5 sacks) played more like what is expected of him. ILB Daryl Washington (3-1) played but didn’t post great numbers. SS Adrian Wilson (4-2, PD) did well. ILB Paris Lenon (0-4) and FS Kerry Rhodes (1-2) had disappointing days. Rookie CB Patrick Peterson (1-0, int, PD) picked off a pass.

Falcons @ Bucs

– Tampa Bay SLB Quincy Black was inactive with an ankle injury and WLB Geno Hayes (4-3) left with a concussion, so MLB Mason Foster (3-2, 1 sack) had plenty of opportunity to rack up numbers but didn’t exactly show up. SS Sean Jones (5-1) continues to post good tackle numbers. CB Ronde Barber (4-0, fumble recovery, int, 3 PD) filled up the stat sheet.

– Atlanta WLB Sean Weatherspoon (10-1) and MLB Curtis Lofton (7-4) keep chugging along. It looks like Weatherspoon might be pulling a Navorro Bowman on Lofton. FS Thomas DeCoud (7-2, int, PD) and SS William Moore (3-1, int, PD) had good days. DE Ray Edwards (2-1) continues to disappoint. After flying off the waiver wire after week 1, DE Kroy Biermann (1-1) has settled in with the below-average numbers that were expected of him.

Steelers @ Colts

– Pittsburgh OLB James Harrison (6-1, FF, 1 sack) surprised no one with a huge game, but I was very surprised to see ILB Lawrence Timmons’ (1-2, PD) meager numbers. SS Troy Polamalu (1-2, 2 PD, 16-yd fumble recovery for TD) also had down tackle numbers but saved the day with a big play. DE Brett Keisel missed the game with a knee injury.

– In case you haven’t noticed, Indianapolis LB Pat Angerer (12-9) is the man. He may be listed as a SLB, but he has been a tackle machine in the middle with Gary Brackett injured. A couple of DEs put up some numbers, as well: Dwight Freeney (3-1, FF, 2 sacks) and Robert Mathis (1-0, fumble recovery, FF, 1 sack). FS Antoine Bethea (2-3) had a down game. SS Melvin Bullitt sat out with a shoulder injury.

Redskins @ Cowboys

– Dallas ILB Sean Lee (4-4, int, 2 PD, fumble recovery) had another outstanding game. He’s the real deal, in case you haven’t figured it out by now. A couple of OLBs terrorized the QB: Demarcus Ware (3-0, 1 sack) and Anthony Spencer (4-0, 1 sack, FF). SS Abram Elam (5-2), FS Gerald Sensabaugh (6-1), and DE Kenyon Coleman (4-2) posted good tackle numbers.

– Washington SS LaRon Landry (4-0, FF) looked extremely strong in his first 2011 game. FS O.J. Atogwe (6-0, PD) had his best game of the season. ILB London Fletcher (4-3) played OK. Maybe I was wrong about rookie OLB Ryan Kerrigan (4-0, FF, 1 sack). He has been in on a lot of plays and has put up good numbers.
