2011 IDP Game Notes: Week 2

Hello and welcome everyone to the 2nd weekly installment of “IDP Game Notes” brought to you by IDP Guru staff writer, Johnny Davis. This column is quickly turning into one of the most comprehensive, all-encompassing IDP articles anywhere. And it’s free!

Raiders @ Bills

– Buffalo ILB Nick Barnett (7 tackles-7 assists, forced fumble) showed he can put up numbers on a good day.  A lot of people were hoping for big things out of DB/LB Bryan Scott (2-0), but he failed to deliver. FS Jairus Byrd (8-2) and SS George Wilson (5-3) look like more reliable options. DE Marcell Dareus (4-0) is doing pretty well, especially for a rookie. DT Kyle Williams (3-2) did better this week after a week 1 dud.

– Oakland MLB Rolando McClain (7-3, 3 passes defensed) finally decided to show what he can do. SS Tyvon Branch (6-2) continues to produce. FS Michael Huff (4-2, PD) was limited with a groin injury, but still put up some numbers. FS Matt Giordano (4-3) filled in while Huff was out. DE Matt Shaughnessy (3-1) and DT Richard Seymour (2-1) quieted a bit after reaching the QB in week 1.


Packers @ Panthers
– Green Bay ILB Desmond Bishop (9-1, 1 sack) is making a case for joining the elite IDP class. SS Morgan Burnett (7-0, FF, int, 1 sack, 2 PD) had a ridiculous stat line, but he lost his running mate FS Nick Collins (3-1, PD) for the season. Charlie Peprah (2-0) will step in for Collins, but that could mean Burnett plays more center field. Monitor this situation. OLB Clay Matthews (4-1, 1 sack, PD) must have heard I was criticizing him and decided to put up better fantasy numbers. ILB A.J. Hawk (1-1, PD) was quiet, while DT B.J. Raji (5-0, 1 sack) had a great game. CB Charles Woodson (5-0, 2 int, PD, fumble recovery) was everywhere.

– Ugh … for the second week in a row, Carolina lost a key LB when Thomas Davis (2-3) tore his knee apart again. While many were expecting MLB Dan Connor (2-0) to emerge in Jon Beason’s absence, it was SLB James Anderson (7-2) who took advantage on this day. DE Charles Johnson (4-0, 1 sack) played another good game, while DE Greg Hardy (1-1) came back down to Earth.


Chiefs @ Lions
– Detroit SLB Justin Durant (8-3) had his annual good statistical game. MLB Stephen Tulloch (3-1, fumble recovery) is not posting the high tackle numbers I was hoping for. DE Kyle Vanden Bosch (4-0, FF, 1 sack) and DT Ndamukong Suh (2-1, 1 sack) got to the QB.

– It was another ugly day for the Chiefs, but at least their safeties got plenty of tackles in Eric Berry’s absence: Jon McGraw (5-5, int, 2 PD), Sab Piscitelli (5-3), and Kendrick Lewis (5-0). ILB Derrick Johnson’s (4-0, 3 PD) day could’ve been worse.


Browns @ Colts
– Cleveland MLB D’Qwell Jackson (6-2, PD) cooled off a bit but still had an outstanding day. DT Ahtyba Rubin (3-1, 1 sack) and rookie DE Jabaal Sheard (4-1, 1 sack, FF, fumble recovery) put up good numbers. SS T.J. Ward (2-2, 2 PD) had a quiet day by his standards.

– With MLB Gary Brackett out with injury, LBs Pat Angerer (3-5, FF) and Kavell Connor (4-6, FF) are trying to pick up the slack. SS Melvin Bullitt (4-5) and FS Antoine Bethea (3-5, PD, fumble recovery) were in on a lot of plays. DE Dwight Freeney (2-0, FF, 1 sack) is still a great big-play option.


Bucs @ Vikings
– With Tampa Bay SLB Quincy Black (2-1) nursing an ankle injury, MLB Mason Foster (7-3, FF, 1 sack) stepped up. SS Sean Jones (5-2, 1 sack, fumble recovery) had a second-straight great game. FS Cody Grimm (6-0) and WLB Geno Hayes (5-0) registered good tackle numbers.

– Minnesota CB Antoine Winfield (11-0) put up a ridiculous tackle number. MLB E.J. Henderson (5-1) was the better Henderson on this day but still nothing to write home to Momma Henderson about. SLB Chad Greenway (2-3) was pretty quiet. DE Jared Allen (1-0, 1 sack, PD) salvaged his IDP day with a sack. FS Husain Abdullah (6-0, int, PD) had another good day.


Bears @ Saints
– New Orleans SS Roman Harper (7-0, 2 sacks, FF) was awesome as usual. MLB Jonathan Vilma (1-2, fumble recovery) had a disappointing day. The rest of the New Orleans tackle love was pretty spread out.

– I expected Chicago MLB Brian Urlacher (2-1) to have a monster day as he played the game for his recently deceased mother, but instead WLB Lance Briggs (10-1) was the Bear to shine in the box score. DE Israel Idonije (3-3, 1 sack) had a nice day. DE Julius Peppers (1-0) was quiet.


Jags @ Jets
– Nobody really stood out for the Jets, but plenty of IDPs had good days: FS Eric Smith (4-1, int, 2 PD), CB Antonio Cromartie (2-1, 2 int, 2 PD), ILB Bart Scott (4-0, 1 sack), DE Mike Devito (5-0), and rookie DE Muhammad Wilkerson (2-0, 1 sack, safety).

– Jacksonville MLB Paul Posluszny’s (4-4) numbers looked better in week 2, but it’s still not the dominant performance he’s capable of. SLB Daryl Smith (5-1), DE Matt Roth (3-0, 1 sack), and CB Rashean Mathis (7-0, int, PD) got in on the tackle party.


Seahawks @ Steelers
– You knew Pittsburgh’s IDPs were going to be angry about the beatdown they received from the Ravens last week, and they took it out on the lowly Seahawks: SS Troy Polamalu (6-2, 1 sack, PD), ILB James Farrior (2-1, 1 sack), ILB Larry Foote (4-0, 1 sack), OLB Lamarr Woodley (2-1, .5 sack), and OLB James Harrison (2-2, 1 sack). Lawrence Timmons (5-3) stands out because he was the only notable IDP not to get to the QB.

– A few Seattle IDPs racked up some tackles – SS Kam Chancellor (5-4), FS Earl Thomas (5-1), and WLB Aaron Curry (4-2, PD) – but there’s not much to get excited about past that. MLB David Hawthorne (2-1) played but didn’t rack up the numbers.


Ravens @ Titans
– Tennessee MLB Barrett Ruud (2-0) had a surprisingly disappointing day. DE Dave Ball (4-0, 1 sack), FS Michael Griffin (4-0, PD), and DE Derrick Morgan (3-0, 1 sack) stood out on the stat sheet. SS Chris Hope missed the game with a bum shoulder.

– Baltimore’s usual suspects had great statistical days – ILB Ray Lewis (6-2, PD), FS Ed Reed (5-3), and OLB/DE Terrell Suggs (2-1, int, PD) – but the real story here comes from SS Tom Zbikowski (5-1) and CB Lardarius Webb (9-1, PD). Zbikowski continues to outshine Bernard Pollard (1-0). Webb looks like a legit tackle-producer, but his playing time might get cut if Jimmy Smith and Chris Carr can get back from injury.


Cards @ Redskins
– With tackle hog SS LaRon Landry still sidelined with injury, the IDP wealth was pretty spread out for the Redskins: SS Reed Doughty (3-3, fumble recovery), ILB London Fletcher (2-3, int, PD), ILB Rocky McIntosh (3-5, 1 sack, PD), and rookie OLB Ryan Kerrigan (3-0, 1 sack, 2 PD).

– Arizona’s DBs continued to put up numbers: FS Kerry Rhodes (7-1, 1 sack, PD), rookie CB Patrick Peterson (5-3), and SS Adrian Wilson (3-1, int, 2 PD). With ILB Daryl Washington out with a calf injury, a couple of LBs looked decent: ILB Paris Lenon (4-2, PD) and ILB Stewart Bradley (5-2). Lenon suffered an ankle injury, so monitor his situation.


Cowboys @ 49ers
– With Dallas, it’s all about ILB Sean Lee (9-2). With two straight dominant performances, he’s steadily climbing my man-crush list. Some other ‘boys spent their day terrorizing San Fran QB Alex Smith: DT Jay Ratliff (4-0, 1 sack), OLB Demarcus Ware (2-0, 2 sacks), DE Jason Hatcher (4-0, 2 sacks), and OLB Anthony Spencer (2-0, 1 sack).

– San Fran’s stud ILB Patrick Willis (8-1, FF) showed why he is considered an elite IDP, but the 49ers’ other ILB Navorro Bowman (9-1, PD) had his second-straight big game to make a case for his own IDP value. DE Ray McDonald (1-0, 1 sack) at least registered a sack for all the people who picked him up off the waiver wire. SS Donte Whitner (4-0, int, PD) had another good day as FS Dashon Goldson remained sidelined due to injury.


Texans @ Dolphins
– Houston ILB Brian Cushing (7-3) had a big day, while his ILB mate Demeco Ryans (1-0) was nowhere to be found. SS Glover Quin (4-0, fumble recovery) and rookie DE J.J. Watt (3-1) made an appearance on the stat sheet.

– Miami DE Randy Starks (6-0) got plenty of tackles, OLB Cameron Wake (2-1, 1 sack) got to the QB again, and ILB Karlos Dansby (4-0) hurt his groin. Meanwhile, a handful of DBs put up some numbers: FS Reshad Jones (4-2, 1 sack), SS Yeremiah Bell (4-5), CB Vontae Davis (6-0), and CB Sean Smith (4-2, 2 PD).


Chargers @ Patriots
– New England WLB Jerod Mayo (8-3, FF) got back to his studly ways. SS Patrick Chung (4-1) hurt his hand but appears to be OK. His owners sure hope so because he is an elite DB option when healthy. SLB Rob Ninkovich (3-1, fumble recovery, 1 sack) and back-up SS Sergio Brown (5-2, int, PD) had nice days. DT Vince Wilfork (0-2, int, PD, 36 int return yards) looks really funny running down the field with the ball.

– San Diego FS Eric Weddle (8-4) lived up to the hype after an unspectacular week 1. ILB Donald Butler (5-3, 1 sack) had another good tackle day. DT Antonio Garay (4-2), SS Bob Sanders (4-2), and ILB Takeo Spikes (1-6, PD) are also noteworthy.


Bengals @ Broncos
– Well, hello, Denver WLB Wesley Woodyard (10-3, PD). Welcome to the party. What’s that? You have to get back to oblivion? OK. It was nice of you to drop by. Other Denver noteworthies: SS Brian Dawkins (3-1, PD), SLB Von Miller (3-0, 1 sack, 2 PD), and MLB Joe Mays (5-3). DE Elvis Dumervil sat this one out.

– Whoah, a handful of Cincy IDPs had big days: DE Michael Johnson (7-0, FF, 1 sack), MLB Rey Maualuga (6-1), and WLB Thomas Howard (7-1). FS Reggie Nelson (3-1, FF) and DE Carlos Dunlap (4-0) also showed up.


Eagles @ Falcons
– Philly DE Trent Cole (5-1, 1 sack, PD) continues be a top-of-the-line option. DE Cullen Jenkins (3-1, 2 sacks) got to the QB twice. SS Jarrad Page (5-4) had another great tackle day. SLB Jamar Chaney (5-4) and rookie MLB Casey Matthews (4-3) had good days.

– It looks like Atlanta has two of the top tackle threats among their LB corps: MLB Curtis Lofton (6-4, 2 PD) and WLB Sean Weatherspoon (7-3). DE Kroy Biermann (2-2) fell back down to Earth after flying off the waiver wire in many leagues. DE Ray Edwards (2-0, fumble recovery) at least had 64 yards on a fumble recovery.


Rams @ Giants
– New York FS Antrel Rolle (8-1, FF) had a huge game, while DE Justin Tuck (4-1, 1.5 sacks) made a successful return from a neck injury. SS Kenny Phillips (4-0, 2 PD) and WLB Michael Boley (3-3, 65-yd fumble recovery for TD, PD) did pretty well for the G-men, too. DE Jason Pierre-Paul (2-0, .5 sack, PD) looked very strong, but his numbers don’t quite tell it.

– St. Louis MLB James Laurinaitis (9-5) was in full-on beast mode, while FS Quintin Mikell (6-1, int, PD) racked up some numbers, as well. The D-line showed up: DE James Hall (3-1, 1 sack), DE Chris Long (3-0, 1 sack, PD), and rookie DE Robert Quinn (2-0, 1 sack). For the second week in a row, CB Justin King (8-1) had huge numbers.
